Tropical Fish Secrets

We kept a 50 gallon aquarium for a number of years and found out a few things that might be of interest. One of them was that our 50 gallon tropical fish aquarium was actually fairly easy to maintain. Once you get things up and running there's enough water volume to keep the temperature and other factors steady. A small aquarium is more difficult for these same reasons, though it's a little easier to keep clean with less glass surface.
Of course, if you don't have the room for a big aquarium...
After killing off a few fish we found out that some will be more or less hardy than the others.
What this means is that if the temperature of the aquarium, or the pH, or other factors vary too much too rapidly you will kill off certain fish. Gold fish can survive almost anything within reason, most tropical fish can't, and some are particularly fragile.
Small ornamental fish, such as Tetras, are particularly fragile. Again, a bigger aquarium makes it easier to control various factors and support tetra
longevity. Getting the proper accessories and supplies will also help.
Your aquarium heater should be rated for the size of your aquarium, as should your other aquarium supplies, especially filters. For example, if you're buying that 50 gallon setup (about four feet wide and 18" deep, including stand,) you'll want a filter rated for at least a 50 gallon tank.
Anything less will get clogged faster and may not be able to deal with cleaning that much water. Saving money on a smaller filter will cost you more in dead fish.
Other aquarium supplies you'll need will be a pH test kit. When you choose your fish pay attention to their preferred pH.
Most fish are happiest at a pH of 7.0 or a bit less, but others will prefer a pH a little higher or lower. Certain aquarium plants might also do better at different pH levels. Your test kit will help you keep everything where you want it to be.
Consider an ammonia kit, as well. If you have the right filter set up it probably won't be a problem, but it's definitely worth checking every once in awhile.
An aquarium vacuum is a nice device to have. This can be as simple as a siphoning tube with a wide business end. The water siphons into one of those 5 gallon buckets (or down a nearby drain) along with the goop you're vacuuming up. Simply get the siphon going and run the business end along the surface of the gravel. You'll pick up left over food, plant bits, waste, and whatever other detritus settles to the bottom of your tank.
Make sure you keep an eye on the water level in that bucket and avoid sucking up your fish!
At some point you may find algae growing on your plants or on the walls of your aquarium. Certain fish will eat certain types of algae, other fish will eat different types. For the gunk that grows on the glass you'll probably need a scraper. A metal blade on a wand (like a paint scraper) works well for glass aquariums, but will tear up acrylic aquariums. For acrylic you'll have to use something much softer, such as a cloth.
Most tap water has a variety of chemicals added in to kill any microbes and make it safe for human consumption. The problem is that these chemicals will kill your fish. Make sure you pick up a water conditioner designed to remove chlorine and the other chemicals and add it to the water before you put that water in your aquarium.
By the way, you should also make sure that the new water you pour in is about the same temperature as the existing water or you'll shock your fish. Pour it in gently.
I once sloshed it in a little too fast and the current banged a fish into a rock!
